Atlantic City Aquarium

Atlantic City Aquarium (Atlantic City, USA) — detailed description, address and photo. Reviews of tourists about the best things to do in Atlantic City.

The Atlantic City Aquarium and Sea Life Center is a place where you can see the inhabitants of the Atlantic Ocean and exotic seas in all their stunning diversity. More than 100 species of colorful fish, several varieties of sharks that you can even “touch”, mollusks and arthropods are ready to appear before visitors in several huge tanks. An old-timer of the Atlantic City Aquarium – the sea turtle Groman – will “tell” about his cool and mysterious world and greet the smallest visitors. The Aquarium hosts a shark and stingray feeding show every day, in which you can participate (not as food, if that). The Atlantic City Aquarium is also interesting for its historic building of the late 19th century, which once housed the management of pleasure boats. See citypopulationreview for state facts, symbols and history of Louisiana.

A bit of history

The Atlantic City Aquarium opened in 1999 and became part of the Atlantic Coastal Conservation Foundation. It is located in the historical part of the city’s piers, from where it once began to flourish in the field of maritime commerce and water entertainment. Visitors enter the Aquarium through the historic Pleasure Boat Office Building, which once served as the starting point for cruises along the shores of Atlantic City. In addition, the area has a lot of interesting things: restaurants with ocean views, water sports stations and a variety of shops.

In the open aquarium, you can pet several species of tropical sharks and manta rays.

What to watch

The Atlantic City Aquarium is divided into several themed pools. The largest one is dedicated to the underwater flora and fauna of the mid-Atlantic. Most of the inhabitants of the Aquarium live here, including the Groman sea turtle. The Oddities of the Ocean tank will introduce you to the amazing creations of nature – molluscs and arthropods, sponges, corals and so on. You should definitely look into the coral reef aquarium – a piece of the Caribbean Sea and the southern part of the Indian and Atlantic oceans. In the open aquarium, you can pet several species of tropical sharks and manta rays. But for obvious reasons, it is forbidden to lower your hands into the tank with piranhas. There is also a rainforest pavilion, a jellyfish pool, an anemone and clownfish aquarium, and a terrarium with fauna from the Mallika River Basin in southern New Jersey.

Every day at 11:00 am, the Aquarium hosts a show-feeding of marine life in the main tank with a volume of 110,000 liters. A working diver dives into the aquarium and feeds various cold-blooded animals from his hands, and the audience at this time can ask questions and ask to pet the inhabitants they especially like.

At 12:00 and 15:00 manta rays are fed, and at 14:00 in the terrarium opposite the main tank there is a 20-minute display of the most interesting reptiles of the Aquarium: a giant boa constrictor, tarantulas and a bearded dragon lizard.

Atlantic City Historical Museum

Historical Museum of Atlantic City (Atlantic City, USA) – expositions, opening hours, address, phone numbers, official website.

The Atlantic City Historical Museum is a clear example of the fact that not everything in the city revolves around red, black and zero. Its exhibits will tell about the city from an unknown side: about a remarkable diversity of cultures, a long and turbulent history for various events, and exciting modernity. Here you can learn about the Miss America pageant, admire photographs of sand sculptures, take pictures with the sculpture of Mr. Peanut Nut, the founding father of the city, marvel at the history of the creation of the Monopoly game and, of course, follow the twists and turns of prohibitions and permits for gambling in Atlantic City. Entrance to the museum is free, and it is located on the picturesque Garden Pier, so it’s nice to take a walk here in your free time.

A bit of history

The history of the museum began with the private collection of Alfred Heston, consisting of books, photographs, postcards, audio and video recordings, and interesting artifacts from the history of Atlantic City. At first, this collection was part of the collection of the Public Library, and then, as it grew, the need arose for a separate museum. And so it happened – and in the 1950s, the Atlantic City Historical Museum was formed, which opened in the heart of the Garden Pier entertainment district. In recent decades, the museum has undergone a large-scale reconstruction, and today there are a lot of interactive features with the latest technology.

The famous “Nucky Empire” – a place where alcohol continued to be served despite Prohibition and a real haven of entertainment in the dark days of “fun with a cup of tea.”

What to watch

The exposition of the Historical Museum is divided into several thematic parts. Atlantic City – The Nation’s Playground showcases much of Heston’s original collection. The exhibits are located on both sides of the stylized Boardwalk: you seem to be walking along the main street of the city from its origins to the present day. In addition to photographs and archival documents, here are the costumes of the inhabitants of the city, interior and household items, souvenirs and postcards from different times.

The Al Gold Photo Room is dedicated to the heyday of Atlantic City in the 1920s through a series of vintage photos. The famous “Nucky Empire” – a place where alcohol continued to be served despite Prohibition and a real haven of entertainment in the dark days of “fun with a cup of tea.” The “Magic of Kentucky Avenue” exhibition chronicles the city’s rise as a popular weekend getaway for Philadelphia, New York, and Washington in the 1930s-1960s. Numerous photo and video documents illustrate the devastating hurricane of 1962, during which almost half of the city was washed into the ocean, and the consequences of another storm, Sandy, which pretty much battered Atlantic City already in 2012. The Gale Stern Showroom tells the story of the shipwreck of the RJ Walker off the coast of the city. The interactive exhibition “Atlantic City Hotels” will allow you to look at the city from a bird’s eye view.
