History of Conover, North Carolina

Conover, North Carolina has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The town was originally named for James Conover, a Revolutionary War soldier who settled in the area in 1819. As more settlers arrived, the town grew and by the mid-1800s had become an important trading center for both agricultural and manufactured goods. In 1891, Conover was officially incorporated as a town and began to experience rapid growth.

The arrival of the railroad in 1903 helped to further spur economic development as it allowed for easier transportation of goods and people. This increased trade helped make Conover one of the most prosperous towns in Catawba County at the time. During this period, several new businesses opened up including a cotton mill, grist mill, sawmill, tannery and other industries that made use of local resources.

In 1912, Conover was connected to Charlotte by railroad which further increased its commercial activity as well as its population. By 1940, there were approximately 8400 people living in Conover making it one of the largest towns in Catawba County at that time.

Throughout much of the 20th century, Conover remained largely unchanged until Interstate 40 was built through town in 1981.
